Sony STR-DH800 7.1-Channel Audio Video Receiver (Black)

I upgraded this from a 7 channel pioneer amp. I really liked my pioneer and was hoping that it would match it in quality. I found the menus at first a little strange to navigate through, but its easy now. I don’t like how when I do a manuel tone test of the sound volume of each speaker, I can’t adjust right there, I have to back out of the menu and go into the other setting. Pioneer allowed to adjust as I listened. No big deal, just annoying. Perhaps there is a way to do it and I’m an idiot.

Here is what I like that the sony has over the pioneer. 1. It has multiple crossovers for the fronts, rears, center and surrounds. Pioneer just had one setting (which makes it difficult if running different brands of speakers). 2. The amp pushes my speakers a little more. 3. It is much more a “plug and play” amp. My pioneer required me to assign the ports (like the fiber optic port) to decode a digital before it would play the digital audio.

I am very pleased with this amp. I paid 170 at a thanksgiving sale. The auto calibrate is a little hoaky if you ask me. I would recommend anyone to buy this amp. As far as setting it up – set all the speakers to small no matter how large they are, wire it with banana clips and 12 gauge wire and put Terminator Salvation in DTS Master Audio and enjoy the rich bass and sound. After a couple of weeks trying to install this to my existing TV, component, IPOD, DVD, and others, it has been frustrating and very difficult to install. I’ve called SONY and they gave me some information but it did not work. They could install for an additional $125. I’m actually giving up and may have to call them or return this receiver. Low Price Sony STR-DH800 7.1-Channel Audio Video Receiver (Black)

I purchased this receiver to replace the Sony STR-DH700 that I bought several months ago. Wow, what an upgrade!! The DH700 was an excellent receiver also, but didn’t enough HDMI connectors for all of my electronic components. Now with the DH800, I have my cable box, ps3, LCD TV and two blu ray players all hooked up via HDMI. This is so much easier than using the HDMI ports on my TV. I really like the remote, which has all of the HDMI buttons on the bottom, makes it very easy to switch between different sources. The DH800 has all banana plugs, versus the DH700, which had only 4 along with a crappy small buttons remote. I set up the receiver to decode all of the DTS-HD Master Audio and DOLBY TRUE HD from my blu ray players with incredible results. Save Sony STR-DH800 7.1-Channel Audio Video Receiver (Black)

Bought the STR-DH800 as an upgrade from a Denon Dolby Pro-logic receiver to achieve 7.1 channel functionality. Connected it to a Sony BD player, a Denon CD player, Philips TIVO, Yamaha speaker system, and Toshiba LCD HD TV. Now all are working well together, but not because the Sony user’s manual was any help.

I write technical training material and do technical training for a car company for a living; this user’s manual gave me a headache. It took 3 DAYS to get everything working together correctly and seamlessly. It’s pretty clear that the manual was written by Sony engineers who already knew how the system worked, but had no perspective on explaining it to people who didn’t.

Regardless, I now am quite pleased with the receiver and all that it can do with my new surround sound home theater system. The cost of the receiver from Amazon was about 1/3 less that anywhere else, so that’s also a plus.

Everything now works together quite well, and I’m sure that I’ve only scratched the surface of the system’s capabilities.

Pros:
Excellent receiver, very flexible and “customizable”.
The speaker auto-calibration feature is a good way to set the speaker balance until you an customize them to your own tastes.
Great value compared to same unit at bog-box stores.

Cons:
Murky and hard to understand user’s manual and set-up instructions. Other less technically adept owners may be frustrated and unhappy with a very good receiver because of the manual.

Buying Sony Home Theater System – Silver/ Black (DAVHDZ273)

I guess for the money you pay it is okay. Sound isn’t audiophile quality but by the time you’re immersed in whatever movie you’re watching the sound is passable. Has a really bad habit of getting the sound out of sync with the TV program you’re watching. I haven’t,however,noticed it doing this with a movie.Possibly because I always use the built-in DVD player. To fix it you have to shut down both and restart.This is VERY disconserting.Over all,if I had to do it over,I would save my money and go with a different system/method of building a home theater sound system.I would buy what I know for sure is a quality receiver/monitor/amplifier and,seperately,a high quality set of speakers.For VERY casual viewing I guess it is okay. I had no doubt that this Sony system would be good when I chose it. This very reasonably priced unit turned out to be better than I expected. I have it set up in an average sized room but the clear sound can fill my entire house. I have it hooked up so that anything that I can see or hear on my tv comes through this unit; including the cable set top box, my existing DVD player, my tv’s tuner and an additional music source. I used HDMI cables to hook up my existing DVD player and cable box and a Toslink Optical Cable to connect it to my tv for the best picture quality. DVD soundtracks are very theatre-like with resounding bass. It has all the power you need to turn up the volume with no distortion. This system has definitely made my living room more like a theater. I love it. My only problem was in hooking up the speakers. The speaker plugs are specially shaped for the back of the receiver. My house was already wired for surround sound under the floor, so I had to splice the existing wires to the new wires in order to use the plugs…the wires with this system are VERY thin, which made it a bit of a pain.
This problem won’t effect everyone. Five stars otherwise. The system is virtually idiot proof to put together, sounds great, and is wonderfully low profile. The receiver is about what you’d expect for the listed specifications. I run at 5.1 instead of 7.1, so I can’t provide comment on that. The auto-calibrate feature for the speakers is easy to do and greatly improves the quality of the experience. I’m not an audiophile, however, so I can’t comment on “lows” or “highs” or whatever; movies sound like you’d expect, except that maybe the bass is more noticeable than with my previous Sony receiver. I generally dislike that the receiver (and I believe it’s true for most or all) doesn’t pass through HDMI without being turned on. That leads to a few mild annoyances, but only mild. I also dislike that the system doesn’t yet appear to have the ability to automagically turn 2.1 or 2.0 into 5.1. I can enable it with a press of a button, but if there’s a setting, I haven’t been able to find it through the on-receiver-screen-only interface.

Speaking of said interface, hands-down the best reason I like this speaker system is the on-screen display that will show me which speaker configuration is active. I have a smallish family room, and it’s not always easy to determine by sound if a speaker is active or not–and if it is active, if it is being transformed from 2.1 to 5.1, or if it’s a true 5.1 signal. This little on-screen display is huge. I also run a media server with a PS3 front-end, and this allows me to check whether my settings for audio have been maintained or downsampled through the process.
